Ellis voyage map

SECTION 1 - Prologue:  Asleep by the frozen sea   [Dobbs, Ellis & The HBC]

Our introduction sets the scene for the renewed interest during the mid-eighteenth century exploration of the Arctic. The explanation, when pressure was put on the Hudson's Bay Company by the British Parliament to broaden the scope of their trading monopoly to include further exploration for a Northwest passage, is revealed;  thereby kindling an interest in the exploration, survey and economic potential of that forgotten corner of British North America. Plus the relevance of the voyage today.
